Hiroshima is one of Japan’s top gourmet destinations! The best part? It’s both affordable and incredibly delicious.
When you think of Hiroshima, you think of Okonomiyaki, Ramen, Tsukemen (dipping noodles), and Jiru-nashi Tantanmen (soupless spicy noodles). Teppanyaki (griddle cooking) is also fantastic here. Hiroshima has a rich “noodle” culture, and local Ramen, often called “Chuka Soba,” is the ultimate soul food for the people here.
Honestly, almost every Okonomiyaki shop you find is great! If you’re walking around and see a place that looks inviting, feel free to step in. There are very few places with bad prices or bad service, and no tipping is required in Japan.
🔥 How to Eat Okonomiyaki Like a Local The local way is to eat directly off the hot griddle using a small metal spatula (called a “hera”)! It’s super hot, so be careful not to burn yourself. Blow on it before you take a bite!
Thinking, “I don’t want hot food on a hot day like this”? I’ve got you covered with some perfect gourmet recommendations! Here are 5 must-try food spots, all within reach of the Peace Park.
1. Kingken (Mecca of Soupless Tantanmen)
One of the top spots to visit near the Peace Park. While O-kun-do is famous internationally, I personally recommend this place.
- How to Eat: The key is to mix it really well from the bottom of the bowl—about 30 times! Doesn’t that sound fun?
- Spice Level: You can choose your spice level, but I recommend “2” for your first time.
- The Ultimate Tip: After you finish the noodles, order a half-bowl of rice and “buchikomu” (dump) it into the remaining sauce. It’s the best ending to the meal!

2. Karakubu (Addictive, “Crazy” Spicy Tsukemen)
Next up is Karakubu. This features cold noodles dipped in a cold, super spicy chili broth. It’s crazy good!
The bright red broth looks amazing in photos, too. If you aren’t confident with spicy food, don’t worry—you can choose “Level 0”. For those who are, challenge yourself to “Level 10 or higher” (my personal recommendation is “Level 15”).

3. Denko Sekai – Takaramachi Branch (Hot & Fresh Teppan Style)
Here, they provide your own personal small griddle right at your seat, so you can eat Okonomiyaki piping hot until the very last bite! The atmosphere is very welcoming and super good. Perfect if you want to relax and enjoy top-tier Okonomiyaki during your sightseeing.

4. Youki – Otemachi Branch (Local Legend Chuka Soba)
When it comes to Hiroshima-style Chinese noodles (Chuka Soba), you could say that “Youki” is the ultimate local legend.
…However, on a scorching hot day with limited sightseeing time, you might want to prioritize spots 1 through 3 first! But if you’re looking for deep, authentic local flavor, this is the one.

5. [My Secret Hack] Hand-Made Onigiri at Shopping Malls (like AEON Mall)
Have you ever tried the hand-made rice balls (Onigiri) at places like AEON Mall Fuchu or AEON Mall Gion?
They are truly incredible. Look at that overflowing filling (Hokkaido salmon) wrapped tightly inside! And you can get one for around 200 yen. Best of all, you don’t have to melt under the hot sun—you can buy them comfortably inside a cool shopping mall.
“Eating out at a nice restaurant isn’t the only definition of good food. Affordable, customizable, and portable. It can be your breakfast, leaving room for an amazing dinner out later.” What a smart way to travel! If you want to know more about the magic of these Onigiri, feel free to ask me anytime!
I was born in Hiroshima and I love Hiroshima. Even though I live in Himeji now, every time I visit Hiroshima, I always eat these delicious foods.
